It’s easy for just about anyone to pick up a device and be productive in no time. Your users expect their documents and apps to be available just about anywhere from any device — and sometimes many devices. But how are you protecting the sensitive data on these devices that could be anywhere in the world? Are your BYOD devices secured without encroaching on personal boundaries? Going mobile is easy; securing and managing it all isn’t. But it doesn’t have to be difficult.

In my experience, Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) has proven to be a great resource— an entire suite of solutions and support in one package – to address many of the core mobility challenges.

The Enterprise Mobility Suite

Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) is Microsoft’s offering for Mobile Device Management, which is made up of three products that collectively deliver a complete mobility management solution. Each piece solves a specific challenge of mobility and integrates not just with itself, but also with other popular productivity suites and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, such as SalesForce, SAP and thousands of others. And it goes without saying that EMS excels at managing other Microsoft applications, like Office 365.

EMS comprises these four components:

  • Azure Active Directory Premium: This cloud-based authentication service integrates with your existing Active Directory. It includes a self-service password management portal, multifactor authentication and single sign-on, as well as security reporting and user/group management tools.
  • Microsoft Intune: This EMS component provides mobile device management, including iOS, Android and Windows; deploys configuration policies and profiles for security, Wi-Fi, email, virtual private networks (VPN), certificates, applications and compliance; enforces conditional access to email and applications; and mobile application management of BYOD devices for access to Office applications, email and documents.
  • Azure Rights Management Service: Protect documents stored in Office 365 or on premises with this service when they’re shared internally or outside of your organization; enforce restrictions on Office documents, such as printing, email, removable drives, expiration and revocation.

Cloud’s Silver Lining for Mobility Management

As anyone who’s done it knows, deploying a mobility management suite on-premises can be challenging. But EMS delivered by a cloud solution provider makes it easier to address many of those challenges. By further integrating the EMS suite with your applications, ultimately, you free up your internal team to focus on other initiatives.
