4 Myths About Software-Defined Everything, Debunked

Learn more about the automation, visibility, performance and compliance benefits of SDx environments.

Software

In a world where software drives nearly every technology, the term software-defined everything (SDx) strikes me as a bit redundant. After all, what isn’t dependent on software these days? Even in the technologies we readily associate with hardware — storage, for instance — the magic is in the software that runs on top.

As SDx matures, this once holistic idea is becoming more narrowly segmented. As with any evolving technology, opinions may differ on what falls under its broad umbrella. Does SDx include Infrastructure as Code? Artificial intelligence? Cloud operating models?

IT professionals may enjoy debating what SDx is, but there’s another valuable approach we can take to the conversation, and that’s to define what SDx isn’t. To that end, let’s examine and debunk four common myths about SDx.

It can be frustrating when you ask if an IT system is safe, and your expert resource responds, “It depends,” followed by a quip that the only secure system is one that’s powered off. Not so helpful.

Most IT teams are proficient in working with one cloud service provider (CSP) or on one facet of cloud computing, but increasingly, they are being asked to manage multiple cloud environments. The shift is substantial, especially because when it comes to security, the devil is in the details.

We know that risks are involved with multicloud Infrastructure as a Service implementations. It’s critical to know what they are and how to manage them. Let’s start by examining how we got here, and why there’s no turning back now.

Let‘s face it: Cybersecurity teams are overwhelmed with work. There simply is not enough time in the day to perform all the high-value tasks they are responsible for, such as consulting with project teams, conducting risk analyses and developing strategic security plans. To make matters worse, security teams often find themselves consumed with time-sensitive and repetitive operational work. Anything they can do to reduce this burden increases their ability to add value to the organization.

Automation has the potential to help with this heavy lifting. Any time security teams find themselves performing work that requires following a repetitive process, it is likely that automation can play an important role in reducing the operational burden. In our work with CDW customers, we have found a few common areas where automation can help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of cybersecurity teams. Let’s look at a few examples.

So. Much. Data.

According to some estimates, 90 percent of the world’s data was created in the past two years, and growth is only accelerating. While storage costs have dropped as data volumes have ballooned, organizations are still running into trouble when they don’t optimize their data storage environments for factors such as cost and regulatory compliance.

By embracing solid data lifecycle management practices, you can overcome major challenges — such as cost, retrieval, disaster recovery and management — and keep up with the rapid pace of your data’s growth.

Cloud governance is a framework that guides how end users make use of cloud services by defining and creating policies to control costs, minimize security risks, improve efficiency and accelerate deployment. It’s imperative to have good cloud governance because it’s a foundational element to your cloud practice that provides the ability to scale and be successful.

Migrating to the cloud is an exciting journey as it provides greater flexibility to the IT teams for creating resources and provisioning them. Gone are the days when it used to take weeks and months to request resources and additional provisioning from the infrastructure teams. Cloud vendors now provide the capabilities to create resources such as compute instances plus add-on software, databases, firewall groups, storage, etc. via APIs.

The cloud-provided capabilities are very powerful and can potentially bring many inconsistencies and resource ownership issues into the environment.
