Cisco Live has always been a place for network professionals to gather and share ideas, to learn about new technologies and trends, and to allow Cisco to announce new products and strategies.

One of the exciting security products announced at Cisco Live 2015 was the Cisco Firepower 9300, a threat-centric security platform for service providers.

The Firepower 9300 is a very different from a typical security appliance. It is a high-performance, carrier-class security services platform that will allow customers to run both Cisco security services and partner services modules on a unified hardware platform. This is very unique given the current dedicated appliance model that is very common today.

Utilizing network programmability and APIs, the Firepower 9300 has the ability to do integrated services stitching for physical, virtual and cloud topologies. Services stitching provides a scalable means to dynamically analyze and alter data flows as the traffic patterns change or threats are found on the network. Ultimately, it provides a solution that can monitor the network and quickly adapt to issues as they arise, while still maintaining a high rate of throughput with low latency.

Aside from the unique security services offering and automation ability that comes with the Firepower 9300, it also boasts some impressive hardware:

  • 600 percent performance increase compared to the Cisco ASA 5585-X
  • 30 percent greater port density than the Cisco ASA 5585-X
  • Intelligent Fastpath & low latency ready
  • Swappable blade architecture
  • 10 and 40 gigabit Ethernet I/O

At release, the Firepower 9300 is targeted toward services providers and will have the ASA firewall and the Radware distributed denial-of-service mitigation capabilities. Cisco is expected to add its own Next-Generation IPS (NGIPS), Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), and additional Cisco and third-party security services by the end of 2015.

I’m looking forward to seeing this solution in action and excited to see how Cisco expands the offering. Feel free to leave a comment below with any questions or contact your account executive for more information.
