Happy SysAdmin Day! Celebrated on the last Friday in July, the 25th marks System Administrator Appreciation Day – a time to appreciate an individual that likely plays a big role in your work life, whether you know it or not.

According to Wikipedia, the system administrator, or SysAdmin, is a person that is responsible for the upkeep, configuration and reliable operation of computer systems; especially multi-user computers such as servers. That might be one of the official definitions, but let me tell you more. While typically being omnipresent around the office, system administrators often perform tireless, never-ending tasks, mostly behind the scenes, that allow staffers to get their work done.

Our Day Starts Early
IT issues can occur day or night. SysAdmins always have to be on alert. Prior to arriving at the office, we are likely checking emails for any issues and/or urgent requests. We often arrive early and leave late.

We also work on weekends and holidays to deploy changes, fixes or upgrades. I’m sure you’ve noticed an “IT Alert” email at some point stating that such-and-such system will be down for maintenance – at night or on the weekend.

Common Questions that System Administrators Hear
SysAdmins typically hear it all. Having been in the business for nearly 20 years, I am no longer surprised by requests from internal customers. Some of the most common questions that we receive include:

  • My system is slow. Why is this happening?
  • Can you restore the file that was on my desktop?
  • What do you mean storage is expensive?
  • Can you increase my email size – again?
  • What do you mean I can’t go to that site?
  • What do you mean that file had a virus?
  • Can you please escalate the resolution of this issue?

Things that We Make Work – Day-in and Day-out
In short, a system administrator makes things work. As you might imagine, that can sometimes be a chore. Some of the things that we are responsible for include:

  • Email
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Telephones
  • Conference calls
  • Internet access and security
  • Installation of hardware and software
  • Plus so much more…

Reasons to be Grateful for Your System Administrator
Just in case you need more reasons to celebrate your system administrator, consider the following:
1. System admins assemble and monitor your network.

  • It’s a system administrator’s job to plan and assemble networks in logical ways. This allows you to communicate with the individuals that you need to communicate with. We also monitor these networks to make sure applications run smoothly.

2. We take care of your computer and other wireless devices.

  • Desperate individuals approach us every day with seemingly unsolvable issues. What’s amazing is that we can typically fix a problem while they attend a meeting or take a coffee break. A simple “thank you” can go a long way with a busy SysAdmin.

3. We take the heat when something goes wrong.

  • Your system administrator is not only responsible for keeping users productive with an uninterrupted workflow, he or she is responsible for doing the same for the organization. If email goes down in the middle of the workday, the staff may be in a panic but management is beside itself. That can be a stressful time for a SysAdmin.

4. We work around the clock for countless hours.

  • Today’s around-the-clock world demands that systems be available 24/7/365. We are responsible for fixing server issues whenever they occur – even at night or on the weekend.

  • So glad someone calls this out! It seems being a sys admin that people only notice what you do when something goes wrong. Everyone seems to forget that we wouldn’t have the Internet we have today without an army of system admins tirelessly supporting it!
