Apple revolutionized modern mobility — introducing the world to pocket-sized devices with the iPod, and then changing modern computing forever with the iPhone and the iPad. Cisco, meanwhile, is considered by many IT professionals to represent excellence in networking.

During a keynote speech at Cisco Live this summer in Las Vegas, Apple CEO Tim Cook joined Cisco Chief Executive Officer Chuck Robbins on stage, and it was immediately evident that the partnership between the two companies is already yielding tangible benefits for organizations.

The Cisco Live remarks by Robbins and Cook highlighted these impressive benefits of the Cisco-Apple partnership:

1. Productivity

No matter how much an organization invests in mobility, it won’t pay off unless users are invested. “Looking at the enterprise, people were spending tons of money, but when you looked at the user experience, it wasn’t very good,” Cook said. “We thought we could bring Apple’s legendary ease of use and simplicity to the enterprise and really change the way people work.”

Cook and Robbins both stressed that integration between management solutions from the two companies can prevent dropped wireless connections, which impede productivity.

2. Security

One of the most significant solutions produced by the partnership has been the Cisco Security Connector, designed to deliver deep visibility, control and privacy for iOS devices. “[Enterprises] will never be able to achieve the benefit … of these billions of connections if we don’t bring security,” Robbins said during his conversation with Cook.

“I think together, we make up the most secure combination of anybody in the enterprise,” Cook said. “And I think that increasingly is not just important, but necessary.”

3. Innovation

The Fast Lane Validation Program — a service from Cisco DevNet that allows developers to verify their iOS app functionality on Cisco infrastructure without paying for costly test beds — is expanding to include iOS 11 and macOS.

Cook touted the potential of the partnership to spur enterprise innovation in areas such as augmented reality. “There’s some things … like ARKit, where we’ve integrated augmented reality right into the operating system, and so you can get your hands on it and begin thinking about what AR means to your enterprise,” he said.

4. Collaboration

The partnership between Apple and Cisco means that collaboration tools such as Cisco Spark and WebEx can be integrated with Apple applications such as Calendar, as well as Apple devices. Users, for example, can tap to join meetings directly from a Calendar notification. The result is a more seamless and delightful user experience, with less wasted time.

Cook noted that with less elegant interfaces, users can sometimes struggle to join meetings, losing productivity. Even getting back just five or 10 minutes in a day would make most users very happy. The partnership between Cisco and Apple is intended to deliver such productivity gains. “There are tons of things like that that I’m really excited about,” Cook said.
