Over 14,000 people from 99 different countries traveled to the Venetian in Las Vegas, Nev. for EMC World 2015 held from May 4 through May 7. EMC World is a premier event for EMC, partners and customers, and is rife with announcements, keynote addresses, labs, product demonstrations and events.
Here are a few of my takeaways from the first two days of this informative and energizing industry event.
Simplicity is Key
One of the big themes this year is simplicity – and in many facets. Whether it’s simplicity in admin tasks, deployment or the support experience, EMC is stressing effortlessness across the board. From the time deploying a VSPEX Blue hyper-converged appliance to managing the environment, ease is at the forefront. For instance, the time from powering up a VSPEX Blue appliance to first provisioning a virtual machine is only about 15 minutes – and is as simple as answering some basic questions. Moreover, David Goulden, EMC’s Information Infrastructure CEO, states that building an enterprise-class hybrid cloud solution with EMC technology can take a little as 28 days. Now that’s an impressive turnaround time.
You couldn’t turn around without hearing the words “software-driven” or “software-defined.” There was talk of software-defined networks, software-defined storage, software-defined data centers…software-defined everything. EMC has brought this to the forefront this year at EMC World by offering DevOps breakout sessions, a first for this leading IT industry conference.
Launch of the VxRack
The big announcement on the first day was made by VCE CEO, Praveen Akkiraju. The impressive reveal was the VxRack, EMC’s hyper-converged rackscale architecture by its VCE converged systems division. The exciting news revealed that the VxRack can scale up to 1,000 nodes 240M IOPS, as well as 38PB capacity.
“The VxRack Systems are purpose-built to enable enterprises and service providers to support existing Tier 2 and emerging born-in-the-cloud applications with massive scale capability and cost optimization,” said Akkiraju.
The VxRack will fit seamlessly together with the Vblock portfolio within the VCE Vscale architecture, but here are some key differentiators between the two:
- Scaled up with resiliency
- Supports Tier 1 and Tier 2 apps
- Scaled out with simplicity
- Supports Tier 2 traditional and new apps
VxRack will also support multiple hypervisors, as well as bare metal builds.
These are just a couple of running themes (and one big announcement) that have struck me in the first two days EMC World 2015.
